SFMelges24.com website upgrades

posted: 12-17-2007

Tom Klenke our fleet website administrator is pleased to announce that our fleet website, SFMelges24.com has had a major functional upgrade.

Owners, drivers and interested crew, please take a minute to put your contact information into the roster at http://www.sfmelges24.com/roster/ Also, please indicate which regattas you are planning to attend on http://www.sfmelges.com/schedule/

Please note two important things

  1. we will continue to use the Yahoo! Email discussion group for real-time notices.
  2. your contact information is protected from spam collectors by use of a captcha. The captcha sometime be a bit tough to decipher – of course that’s what makes it effective. For more information here's a better description

Here’s the full story……

“Several of my crew and friends are active Vanguard 15 sailors. The Treasure Island Vanguard 15 fleet’s website has much of the functionality I wanted to bring to SFMelges24.com…especially the crew lists, results, calendar, and photo sharing,” says Klenke. “The look of the site is a tad rough around the edges, but we can alter that if we want to and we can’t beat the price…[free].”

Thanks to Paul Deeds, local Express 27 sailor and creator of MyFleet.org, for the original code and providing the server.

“I wrote most of the code for the vanguard15.org site a while back and host the site on my server along with sites for 4 other fleets and some mailing lists,” says Deeds, “which you can see here.

According to Deeds, “Everything is database driven and most of the site can be updated using an online admin interface.”

Deeds notes “What you [had] up there [looked] very nice, but it [didn’t] seem to be very interactive. We've found that making things interactive helps improve communication in the fleet quite a bit.”

Here’s a quick walk through of the sites improvements

Home Page

The home page will display the next coming event from the fleet schedule. The number of boats planning to attend and the number of individuals looking to crew is also displayed. The name of the most recent event is displayed along with a link to the results. As the regular season progresses, the current standings will be updated after each regatta.

Events

The events pages lists all the events in the 2008 schedule. By clicking on the “Details” link, owners/drivers can indicate that they are planning to race their boat and crew can let it be know that they are looking for a ride. Additionally, there is a message board for each regatta. After every sparsely attended regatta, folks at the beer tent say “I wish we could all get on the same page” If we use this tool, the Events page can help us get it together.

Communication

Again, the primary method for real time communication will be the Yahoo! Email discussion Group. However, we now have message boards for general fleet discussion, for sale, and a separate message board for each event.

Roster

The roster page is a list of owners and crew and their contact information. As noted above your personal information is protected from spam crawlers by use of a captcha algorithm.

Crew List

Folks interested in crewing on a Melges 24 can sign up and provide contact information, experience, weight and preferred crew position. Again, their personal information is protected by the captcha algorithm.

Resources

The links and rules pages have be reorganized here and we’ve added the missing owner’s manual, some how-to videos and soon tuning guides.

Photos

Myfleet.org has made is easy for us to upload, share and organize photos. I hope this will be a great way to keep up the excitement in the class.

Videos

Thanks to the magic of YouTube there are some great videos of M24s in action. We’ll be compiling a list of the best here.
